What is degree of freedom of a block foundation?

Before going into this, it will be more genuine and meaningful if we have a short idea about what is degree of freedom. Degree of freedom: The number of independent co-ordinates required for describing/illustrating or determining the motion/movement or vibration of a system is known as degree of freedom. The rigid block foundation is designed to have six degree of freedom. Thus, it means any displacement or movement can be resolved into six independent displacements which are as follows;

  1. Translation along X-axis
  2. Translation along Y-axis
  3. Translation along Z-axis
  4. Rotation about X-axis
  5. Rotation about Y-axis and
  6. Rotation about Z-axis.

The translation along Z-axes and rotation about Z-axis may take place independently to any other motions. But, translations and rotation about X & Y-axis are coupled/joined since these cannot happen or take place independent to one another. The X, Y and Z-axes are also known as pitching, rocking and yawing axes.
